Barbells for Boobs…I Need Your Help!
|October 10, 2013||Posted by Sarah under CrossFit, Health & Wellness|
It’s been two years since my Mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. Due to early detection she was able to attack the cancer quickly and aggressively, and is now cancer free. It was a scary few months and not something any child wants to hear, but we made it through the suck and we’re now stronger for it.
Because cancer seems to run strong in my family, I have made a point to both educate myself about early detection and to help support various organizations that support this. Last year, B and I took part in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in New Haven, CT. It was a great event and raised over $90,000 for the American Cancer Society.
This year, my
obsession involvement with CrossFit has led me to fundraise for Barbells for Boobs, which supports the Mammograms in Action Grant Program that provides proactive breast healthcare services for anyone who needs it…anyone. Their “aim is to help anyone that needs it, anywhere, whether they are male or female, no matter what their age or situation in life.” Pretty cool right?
Since 2009, Barbells for Boobs has grown from 60 athletes from 3 affiliates in Southern California to over 45,000 participants across 1300 affiliates worldwide. So far they have provided 1,123 procedures for 749 individuals and 30 cases of cancer have been detected. That’s 30 lives saved that would not have been otherwise.
I’m sure you’re wondering what my participation with Barbells for Boobs involves. Well on October 27th, the Pink Bra Tour will be stopping at CrossFit New Haven where we will attempt Grace, one of the classic CrossFit benchmark girl workouts. Grace is 30 clean & jerks for time at a prescribed weight of 135# for men and 95# for women. So it’s a whole lot of these:
That’s me doing one at 98# which is my 1 rep max so far. So I’ll probably be scaling back for the WOD to about 65#, but we’ll see how it goes.
Now here’s where YOU come in. I NEED YOUR HELP TO GET THERE!! I have a fundraising goal of $400 that will go straight to the Mammograms in Action Grant Program. $80 will provide one procedure, so if I meet my goal we can help 5 people get the advanced screening they need! Even a small donation of $5-10 can help, so PLEASE (I’m begging) help out this wonderful cause. All you have to do is visit my fundraising page and donate…super easy!
I hope that you will be a part of this great cause. I’ve already donated, so what’s stopping you? Plus you don’t have to do any of the heavy lifting…I’ve got that covered 🙂
Here’s a fun video from last year’s event…you know you want to support that!
