Ok well this really wasn’t my first Thanksgiving, but it’s the first one that I’ve spent at home. Alone with my husband and my cats and it was perfect! I think part of the reason the B and I aren’t a big fan of the holidays is that it always involves a ton of travel. Our families live a minimum of 2 hours aways and then when you add in holiday traffic, it becomes an exhausting trek. We’ve never spent a holiday at home and this year we wanted to make that a priority. So that’s what we did…
I was super excited to make my own turkey dinner but I didn’t want to deal with the hassle of a whole bird, so I decided to get a breast and two legs. I brined them overnight so they would stay moist since the breast was boneless.
That looks kind of gross…. But it really did help keep them moist, because they both came out delicious.
And no Thanksgiving meal is complete without cranberry sauce, you know the good old jellied stuff.
I also decided to make an apple pie, my first one. It actually turned out pretty good and I topped it with some delicious caramel from Fat Toad Farm. YUM!
We had a great day and have really enjoyed this kind of mini-vacation at home. Hibernation has been in full effect 🙂 It’s been fun creating our own traditions and enjoying a holiday in our own home. Yes, I missed my family, but this was really important to us.
How do you spend your holidays?

Brrrrrr…it’s getting chilly up here in the Northeast! I’m completely convinced that I was a cat in a past life because when it’s cold all I want to do is sit in front of the fire, under a blanket and take a nap. Well what’s wrong with that, huh??
When the cold weather comes, B and I hibernate during the weekends. This means turning the pellet stove on, watching movies and cuddling with cats.
But even though it seems unproductive, it’s my favorite time of year! This is when I can go through all the paper (yes I’m a paper hoarder!), when I get to reflect on my life, when I try to get my priorities in order. And believe me…I REALLY need that right now.
I’m not sure what’s been going on with me lately, but I’ve felt very unmotivated. It think it’s a combination of my health, recent stress at work and this cold weather. I miss blogging, I miss the community, I miss those relationships, but I’ve found myself shying away from it all…becoming reclusive. And you know what?? I don’t like it!
So I took the weekend to regroup a bit and I’m looking forward to the long Thanksgiving weekend where I can hopefully put some of my plans in to motion, set some attainable goals and basically get my ass back in gear! I’m sure there will be lots of time with these guys as well…
Do you hibernate in the winter? What do you like to get accomplished?

Gah it’s November! I decided this weekend the I am not a fan of November 1st – March 16th and here are the reasons why:
- It’s cold.
- It’s dark.
- It snows.
- Socks are required.
- The Holidays (yeah yeah…ba humbug!)
- It snows.
During these months, Operation Hibernation goes into effect in my house and on the weekends we crank up the pellet stove and cuddle with cats. Well, I guess it’s not all that bad 🙂
Well it’s been a strange week around here, but thankfully I’m starting to feel better. Thank you to everyone for all the well wishes…I seriously love you all and you have no idea what that means to me. I also want to thank everyone who supported me at Barbells for Boobs last weekend! It was an amazing event and I actually surprised myself with what I could do. I’ll have a full recap up this week, but here’s a preview of my hotness…oh who am I kidding, more like awkward faces…
Besides fasting and lifting heavy things, here are a few other things that caught my eye this week…
Best Fitness Costume totally goes to this guy…
My best friend got a baby goat this week and I can’t deal with the cuteness!

That was my thought process earlier in the week when I started to prep for the colonoscopy I had yesterday. As I mentioned last week, I’ve been having some not so fun health issues that relate to my Ulcerative Colitis (UC) and this procedure was imminent. I’ve been trying to stay positive and not worry too much about what’s going on, but as hard as I’ve tried there just seems to be this black cloud hanging over me for the past few weeks. I just wanted to get this over with, get some answers and move on.
While the procedure itself if no big deal, the day before is no picnic. I’ll save you all the lovely details, but it involves fasting with clear liquid only, drinking a ton of stuff to “clear” your system out, and a lot of time in the bathroom. Fun times!
Notice I labeled the bottle…didn’t want B accidentally grabbing some. My morning was spent in bed cuddling with cats while I waited to leave. I hate when these things are scheduled for mid-day. I rather get up early and get it over with!
Besides all the prep the worst part of any procedure for me is the IV. I am a big baby when it comes to needles and tend to pass out. So the nurse had me lie down on a giant chair in a tiny room to avoid that from happening. It was actually quite comical to watch them maneuver around. I have tiny veins on a good day, but considering that I was dehydrated from the prep it was becoming difficult to find a good one. Just what I wanted to hear. However in the process, the nurse noticed my Barbells for Boobs bracelet and said she saw the coverage on the news and that it looked like a really fun event! Cool 🙂
On the second try, they got the IV started and I didn’t pass out…yet….
I know you’re totally jealous of those super fashionable socks I got to wear. Don’t lie! So I was feeling fine and getting rehydrated, so they put my chair back down and gave me a warm blanket.
That’s when the dizziness started, my ears started ringing and the faintness started coming on. Not sure what happened, but the nurse saw my face and promptly put the chair back down and rubbed my head with a cool cloth. I’m such a wuss…
Trying to keep my sense of humor…
The procedure went well and thankfully I didn’t wake up in the middle this time. Yeah that happened last time…not fun. Good news is my colitis has not spread up my left side and there were no signs of polyps or cancer. Not so good news, I might be showing signs of either an infection or the beginning of Crohn’s. Not so fun. I have an appointment with my doctor in about a week to go over the results and talk about my medication options. I’m voting for steroids over immuosuppressants, but we shall see.
Having not eaten for about 36 hours all I wanted to do was stuff my face. We hit Chipoltle on the way home and I got a burrito bowl with ALL THE THINGS.
The rest of my day consisted of naps and more cat cuddling in front of the pellet stove. I mean really, they are the best nurses!
Today, I’m not feeling 100%. I started running a fever last night and was very achy. A few Tylenol seemed to break the fever, but I’m still feeling sluggish and tired. Besides that, I am emotionally feeling a lot better about things and hopeful that I can now start on the road to remission after having all of these tests done. Because of the possibility of Crohn’s, I might have to do a capsule endoscopy next to get a look at my small intestines and see if there is any inflammation in there. That should be interesting…
Oh and I did end up losing about 4 pounds in the process, so that’s a bonus 😉
